Introduction (Prevention is better than cure)
Prevention is better than cure. Surely you must have heard this many times before. This holds very true when it comes to eye care. When it comes to our eyes each and every person should be taking proactive steps to make sure you retain good eye health for as long as you can. Obviously certain factors like genetics and the environment are not always things we can control, but the things we can control, we should. Below is a list of 6 habits that you can do in order to make sure your eyes stay healthy for as long as possible.
6 Good habits
Healthy and Nutritious food
The list of food that we can eat in order to maintain good eye health is endless. Regardless of what you eat, make sure that it is fresh and organic. Omega 3 foods are also very good for the eyes. Examples of healthy eye foods includes: kiwi, fresh fish and berries.
Plenty of fluids and moist air
Depending on your body weight make sure to drink plenty of fluids, the less sugar they have the better. Around 2 litres a day is a good amount. There is no set limit, listen to your body, it will tell you when it is thirsty and make sure to hydrate then. Maintaining a healthy moist environment around your eyes is also important. You can do this by using a humidifier or by hanging a wet towel in your house.
Eye massage
This one is pretty easy and enjoyable. Before sleeping place a hot damp towel on your eyes for 5 minutes and then proceed to massage the areas around your eyes in small circles.
Eye scrubs
After massaging your eyes with the hot towel you can use a scrub to further protect your eyes. Use a soft cotton scrub, nothing abrasive, and then place it on your upper eyelid. Gently scrub downwards until your bottom eyelid and back up again. Repeat this motion for a couple of minutes. Make sure the action does not cause any discomfort or pain.
Eye exercises
Just like we exercise the muscles on other parts of our bodies at the gym, we can also exercise our eye muscles to make sure they remain healthy and in good shape. An easy way to exercise our eye muscles is to move your eyes in a clockwise rotation for a couple of seconds and then change direction and move it anticlockwise for a few seconds. Repeat this movement as many times as you want to. This is perfect when you are waiting in line or just lying on the couch.
Rest your eyes
If like most people you stare at a computer screen every day make sure that you take a 10 minute break for every hour you spend looking at a device. You can simply just close your eyes or stare of into the distance in order to relax the eyes.
If your eyes become bad what can you do
If your eyes have regressed and prevention is not an option anymore it might be time to seek medical help. Feel free to visit our clinic for a comprehensive eye examination with our ophthalmologists.
