We’ll give you all the details on blue light and how it can damage your eye health.
When purchasing glasses for office use or a monitor, many people look for features that block blue light. There is a perception that blue light harms our eye health and leads to eye fatigue. That’s why we want to block blue light as much as possible.

What is Blue Light?
Visible light refers to the light that our eyes are capable of perceiving. Visible light consists of several colors. Among these, the light with a short wavelength of about 380 to 500 nm and emitting purple and blue colors is called blue light. We often associate it with electronic device displays. However, since visible light originates from sunlight, our eyes are exposed to blue light when we are exposed to sunlight.

The negative impact of blue light
There are varying opinions among individuals regarding the level of harm caused by blue light. In the past, it was commonly believed that blue light was damaging to the eyes. The University of Toledo in the United States conducted an experiment in 2018. When mice were exposed to light of different wavelengths, the ones exposed to blue light experienced a loss of retinal cell function. The study revealed that blue light alters the phospholipids on retinal cells, interfering with the process of transmitting electrical signals from light to the brain and resulting in adverse effects such as vision deterioration.

Insufficient evidence of the impacts of blue light
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) refuted the negative impacts of blue light because existing research lacked evidence. Firstly, since the subjects of the experiment were rats, it cannot be directly applied to humans. Secondly, the reason is that we are not only exposed to blue light in our daily lives. In fact, many people spend most of their day looking at TV, smartphones, or computer monitors, and there have been no reported cases of retinal disease caused by these activities. Therefore, they argued that there is no need to make extra efforts to block blue light unless you have a retinal disease or a damaged retina that necessitates attention.

The necessity of wearing glasses
Blue light-blocking glasses still have their benefits. Wearing blue light-blocking glasses can somewhat reduce eye fatigue. Therefore, wearing blue light-blocking glasses could be beneficial if you have to use electronic devices for extended durations. Nonetheless, even with the blocking of blue light, it is still necessary to take breaks for your eyes when using electronic devices for extended periods.
