Vitamin A

Vitamin A, which is abundant in carrots, is a beneficial nutrient for the eyes. It activates rhodopsin, a visual receptor responsible for transmitting light from the retina to the optic nerve. For our eyes to continuously detect light, rhodopsin needs to continuously decompose and resynthesize through photochemical reactions. In cases where our body lacks vitamin A, rhodopsin levels decrease, leading to symptoms such as an inability to see objects in dark places.

On the other hand, consuming too much may result in liver damage and bleeding caused by toxic effects. To prevent this, the Food and Nutrition Committee of the American Medical Association has set a maximum allowable amount of 3,000μg (10,000IU) per day.

Anthocyanin, known to be abundant in blueberries, is also a pigment component that promotes the resynthesis of rhodopsin. It protects the retinal cells and prevents eye fatigue and dry eyes by improving the circulation of retinal microvasculature through its antioxidant effect.

Lutein & Zeaxanthin

The macula is made up of lutein and zeaxanthin substances. The macula is located in the center of the retina. It is the area where light enters perpendicular to the center of the cornea and lens. Also, the macula is responsible for sharp vision and color perception has a high density of optic cells. The macula is an essential component of vision since it is responsible for over 90% of vision.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are not synthesized directly in our bodies and decrease around the age of 25. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain them through dietary intake. It is generally recommended to consume 10 to 20 mg of lutein and zeaxanthin per day. Additionally, consistent consumption of it may help prevent macular degeneration, which causes a decrease in macular pigment and worsens vision.

Lutein and zeaxanthin protect macular cells from ultraviolet rays and blue light by absorbing blue light, and they also lower the risk of cataracts by removing free radicals created by blue light.

Omega 3

Omega 3, abundant in blueback fish, is a nutrient essential for eye health that cannot be ignored. The most well-known eye health benefits are associated with omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3, as the primary constituent of the protective tear layer, aids in the relief of dry eye symptoms by stabilizing it.

In addition, DHA, the main component of omega-3, makes up 60% of the retinal tissue in the eye, while EPA aids in maintaining eye health by reducing inflammatory substances. As DHA and EPA are not produced by the body naturally, it is necessary to obtain them through food or supplements.

Omega-3

This is an overview of nutrients that are beneficial for maintaining eye health. The eyes are an essential organ in the body that plays a vital role in life. It is required to consume a balanced diet of the nutrients mentioned above, stay away from electronic devices, and give rest to tired eyes by relaxing the eyes and looking at distant places.
