Easy At-Home Solutions for Managing Dry Eyes

Dry eyes can result from issues with tear production or rapid tear evaporation, which affect the balance of the tear film. The tear film comprises three layers: mucin, aqueous, and lipid. The lipid layer, containing oils, is essential in preventing aqueous evaporation and is pivotal in dry eye syndrome. To manage dry eyes, promote adequate oil secretion and maintain a healthy tear film. Here are four effective home remedies to try before seeing an ophthalmologist.

Blink Every 20 Minutes to Coat Your Eyes with Oil

People commonly know that blinking 15 times a minute is normal, but in reality, when focusing on something in daily life, they can blink at one-third of that rate. Blinking not only helps to produce tears but also causes the meibomian glands located in the eyelids to contract and release oil. Therefore, consciously closing your eyes or blinking several times for about 20 seconds every 20 minutes can help relax your eyes and prevent dryness.

Unblock the Meibomian Glands with a 10-Minute Warm Compress

Various reasons block the meibomian glands, causing them to accumulate oil instead of expelling it, impairing their function and leading to dry eyes. Applying heat can help melt the accumulated oil, aiding in proper oil secretion.

  • Use a warm towel or a compress mask at 38-43 degrees Celsius.
  • Apply for 5-10 minutes in the morning and evening.
  • Your vision might be blurry immediately after the compress, but this is a temporary phenomenon, so there’s no need to worry.

Meibomian Gland Massage to Aid Oil Secretion

Massaging the eyelids with your fingers can also help activate the meibomian glands. When massaging, arrange these glands vertically in the eyelids.

  • For the upper eyelid, stroke from top to bottom, and for the lower eyelid, stroke from bottom to top.
  • Gently sweep from the inside to the outside, as if pushing the oil towards the openings of the oil glands.
  • Be careful not to press too hard.

Clean the Meibomian Glands After Applying Eye Makeup

If you frequently draw eyeliner close to the waterline or wear false eyelashes, it’s beneficial to clean the outlets of the meibomian glands to prevent blockage.

  • Use a cotton swab dipped in artificial tears or sterile saline.
  • Lift the eyelid slightly to expose the inside.
  • Wipe the eyelid margins from the inside out.

Dry eye syndrome might not improve overnight. Therefore, consistent management is crucial. If dry eye symptoms persist for an extended period, it is advisable to visit an ophthalmologist for appropriate treatment!
