SMILE Pro: Revolutionizing Astigmatism Correction at ESCRS 2025

Dr. Hannuy Choi, Chief Director of B&VIIT Eye Center, delivered a presentation on the superior astigmatism-correction performance of SMILE Pro at the 43rd Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS 2025), held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

ESCRS is one of the three largest and most influential ophthalmology congresses worldwide. It brings together more than 15,000 ophthalmologists and researchers each year. The conference serves as a global platform. It presents the latest clinical findings. It also showcases technological innovations in cataract and refractive surgery.
For a study to be selected as a speaker, it must undergo a rigorous review process. This process verifies the study’s scientific validity. It also ensures clinical excellence.

During his session, Dr. Choi presented research. The research demonstrated that SMILE Pro using the ZEISS VisuMax 800 significantly reduces postoperative residual astigmatism. It provides improved visual stability compared to conventional SMILE procedures.

SMILE Pro Shows Enhanced Precision in Astigmatism Correction

With recent software upgrades, SMILE Pro now features OcuLine, a technology that enables more precise alignment of the astigmatic axis. As a result, SMILE Pro offers lower residual astigmatism and more stable visual outcomes than traditional SMILE.

Dr. Choi highlighted three core advantages of SMILE Pro:

  • Ultra-fast lenticule creation within approximately 10 seconds
  • CentralLine technology for accurate visual axis alignment
  • OcuLine for automated and precise astigmatic axis compensation

These advancements position SMILE Pro as a new standard in refractive surgery, offering both predictability and safety.

At the conference, refractive surgery specialists from Germany, France, the United States, Japan, and other countries commented:

  • “OcuLine has elevated the precision of astigmatism correction to the next level.”
  • “A sub-10-second incision is a major innovation in surgical safety.”

Sharing Global Insights on the Future of SMILE and SMILE Pro

In addition to her presentation, Dr. Choi was invited by ZEISS, the developer of the VisuMax platform, to join a special session for leading SMILE surgeons worldwide. The session brought together top refractive surgeons from major countries to discuss the current landscape and future direction of SMILE and SMILE Pro.

As a representative refractive surgeon from Korea, Dr. Choi shared insights into the role of SMILE and SMILE Pro in the Korean refractive surgery market. She also discussed clinical strategies for delivering safer and more precise vision correction. The discussion also served as a forum for exchanging international perspectives on surgical excellence and innovation.

Dr. Choi concluded:

“SMILE Pro is not merely a faster procedure—it delivers accurate axis alignment and enhanced precision in astigmatism correction, ultimately maximizing patient satisfaction. We will continue to lead the field through data-driven clinical research and ongoing innovation.”
