If you are planning vision correction surgery in Korea, one of the most important questions is:
“Can I fly after LASIK or SMILE surgery?”
The short answer is yes—but timing matters.
To ensure safe recovery and optimal results, it is important to follow proper guidelines based on your procedure and postoperative condition.
At B&VIIT Eye Center, we help international patients plan both their surgery and travel schedule safely and efficiently.
Is It Safe to Fly After Vision Correction Surgery?
Flying itself does not damage your eyes after surgery. However, factors such as:
- Dry cabin air
- Reduced humidity
- Temporary eye sensitivity
may cause discomfort if you travel too soon.
This is why completing at least the first postoperative check-up is essential before flying.
Recommended Stay After Surgery
The recommended length of stay in Korea depends on the type of procedure.
Recommended Stay by Surgery Type
- SMILE / SMILE Pro: 2 days
- LASIK: 7 days
- LASEK (PRK): 1 month
- PIOL (Phakic IOL): 7 days
For optimal safety and postoperative care, we recommend staying in Korea for approximately one week whenever possible.
Important Travel Guidelines for International Patients
- If your stay after surgery is between 2 and 7 days, available surgical options will be limited to SMILE or SMILE Pro only, as these procedures allow faster recovery and safer short-term follow-up.
- Other procedures such as LASIK, LASEK (PRK), or PIOL require a minimum stay of at least 7 days after surgery to ensure proper healing and monitoring.
- Our medical team will recommend the most suitable surgical method based on:
- Your eye condition
- Examination results
- Length of stay
This personalized approach ensures the safest outcome for international patients.
When Can I Fly After Each Procedure?
SMILE / SMILE Pro
- Most patients can fly 1–2 days after surgery
- Fast recovery makes it ideal for short-term travelers
LASIK
- Flying is usually safe after the first postoperative check-up (next day)
- However, a longer stay (about 7 days) is recommended for stability
LASEK (PRK)
- Recommended to delay flying for at least 30 days
- Longer recovery period requires closer monitoring
PIOL (Lens Implant Surgery)
- Flying is generally recommended after about 7 days
- Requires intraocular pressure monitoring
Postoperative Check-Up Schedule
Regular follow-up is essential for long-term vision stability.
SMILE / SMILE Pro
- Next day → 1 month → 6 months → 1 year
LASIK
- Next day → 1 month → 6 months → 1 year
LASEK (PRK)
