AI in ICL Surgery: Dr. Ryu’s Insights from AAO 2025

The Only Speaker from Asia – Showcasing the Global Excellence of Korean Vision Correction Surgery

Dr. Ryu Ik Hee, Chief Director of B&VIIT Eye Center, successfully delivered an invited lecture at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO 2025) held in Orlando, USA, on October 17th, 2025. The AAO is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious ophthalmology conferences, where ophthalmologists from around the globe gather annually to share the latest surgical techniques and research outcomes. The year, Dr. Ryu was invited as an international lecturor in the field of ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) surgery.

Representing Asia in the Global “ICL Sizing Instruction Course”

At AAO 2025, Dr. Ryu participated as the sole Asian speaker in the “Methods for ICL Sizing Instruction Course“, a session that brought together leading lens implantation specialists from each continent.

The course featured distinguished ophthalmologists including Dr. Roger Zaldivar (Argentina), Dr. Aaron White and Dr. Robert Lin (USA), Dr. Andrea Russo (Italy), and Dr. Dan Reinstein (UK). Together, they discussed advanced methodologies for determining ICL sizing – a critical factor in achieving successful surgical outcomes.

Establishing the “Korean ICL Sizing Protocol” Based on Extensive Clinical Experience

Accurate lens sizing is universally recognized as one of the most crucial elements in ICL surgery, as it directly affects post-operative stability, safety, and long-term results. However, sizing standards can vary significantly by ethnicity and region.

In his lecture, Dr. Ryu presented the “Korean ICL Sizing Protocol“, a methodology optimized for the anatomical characteristics of Asian eyes. The session provided a valuable platform for global experts to exchange insights and discuss practical solution for clinical application.

Introducing AI-Based Sizing Technology “LOOCUS IOL”

Dr. Ryu also unveiled the clinical validation results of LOOCUS IOL, an AI-powered lens sizing program co-developed by B&VIIT Eye Center and VISUWORKS. Built upon B&VIIT’s vast clinical database accumulated over decades, LOOCUS IOL demonstrates how artificial intelligence can enhance surgical precision and contribute to the standardization of ophthalmic procedures. The presentation received strong attention for providing concrete evidence of AI’s potential to improve surgical outcomes in refractive surgery.

Setting the Global Standard for Data-Driven Precision Surgery

Over the past 31 years, B&VIIT Eye Center has accumulated clinical data from more than 590,000 eyes, setting benchmarks in the field of vision correction. Through ongoing research collaborations, the center continues to develop and apply AI-based diagnostic tools and personalized ICL sizing systems, further advancing the quality of customized precision surgery. These efforts have earned international recognition from academic societies and medical institutions for B&VIIT’s excellence in both technology and research.

Dr. Ryu’s participation as the only invited speaker from Asia at AAO 2025 marks a meaningful milestone – introducing Korea’s advanced ICL surgical expertise to a global audience.

B&VIIT Eye Center remains committed to strengthening the competitiveness of Korean ophthalmology through data-driven precision surgery and international research collaboration.
