B&VIIT’s groundbreaking research draws global attention for its unprecedented scale of data-driven analysis
At the EVO ICL Visionary Group Meeting held on October 29, Dr. Hanny Choi, CEO and Chief Ophthalmologist of B&VIIT Eye Center presented the study titled “Long-Term Visual Outcomes of ICL Implantation versus Laser Vision Correction in High Myopia Patients.”
The event exclusively invited leading ophthalmic surgeons with extensive experience in EVO ICL procedures from around the world. Among Korean institutions, B&VIIT Eye Center was the only center to have two ophthalmologists invited.
Dr. Ik Hee Ryu, CEO and Chief Ophthalmologist of B&VIIT Eye Center, served as session chair, facilitating the academic discussion, while Dr. Choi presented the main research findings. Together, they demonstrated B&VIIT’s strong foundation in clinical excellence. They also highlighted data-driven ophthalmic research. This reaffirmed Korea’s leadership in advanced eye care technology.

Long-Term Stability of Vision Correction Proven Through 260,000 Clinical Cases
The study was based on 260,000 eyes of clinical data accumulated over the past 15 years at B&VIIT Eye Center – one of the world’s largest datasets in the field of vision correction. The research examined the long-term progression of myopic regression. It compared patients with high and moderate myopia who underwent LASIK, LASEK, SMILE, or ICL implantation.
Results showed that ICL implantation demonstrated superior long-term stability and predictability, objectively confirming that visual outcomes can vary significantly depending on the chosen surgical method.
B&VIIT emphasized that this research goes beyond a simple comparison of surgical results — it provides a scientific basis for personalized surgical decisions based on each patient’s long-term visual stability.

Toric Lens Study Highlights the Importance of Personalized Astigmatism Correction
Another component of the study focused on Toric ICLs for astigmatism correction.
The B&VIIT research team compared changes in corneal endothelial cell density between patients who received Toric ICLs and those who received Non-Toric ICLs.
To enhance precision, multiple diagnostic instruments were used, revealing that patients with Toric ICLs showed a lower rate of endothelial cell loss.
This finding suggests that for patients with astigmatism, customized lens selection is beneficial. It considers both corneal structure and astigmatic axis. This approach leads to better visual outcomes. It also results in greater endothelial cell stability. These benefits go beyond what can be achieved through basic refractive correction alone.
The study confirmed several factors that influence the optimal choice of surgery. These factors include the degree of myopia, corneal condition, and presence of astigmatism. This provides a valuable foundation for developing personalized vision correction standards in the future.

VISUWORKS Partnership: Enhancing Accuracy of Vision Correction Through AI-Powered Analysis
This research was conducted in collaboration with VISUWORKS, B&VIIT’s AI ophthalmic analysis subsidiary.
Dongyoung Kim, lead researcher at VISUWORKS, refined B&VIIT’s 260,000-eye dataset and developed an AI-based analytical model that significantly enhanced both precision and reliability.
The AI model analyzed thousands of biometric parameters. These parameters include corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth, lens distance, and astigmatic axis. The AI model aims to improve personalized lens sizing and visual outcome prediction accuracy.
The study demonstrated that AI technology can simultaneously improve the stability and predictability of vision correction procedures.
